EMDR & Trauma Therapy

EMDR & Trauma Therapy

Most people will experience trauma at some point in their lifetime. Many recover, but for some the effects are long-lasting and can show up in different ways:

Common signs of unresolved trauma

  • Avoidance, steering clear of places, sights, or sounds that recall the event; anxiety, depression, numbness, or guilt
  • Re-experiencing, intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks
  • Hyperarousal, anger, irritability, hypervigilance, reckless behavior, or disturbed sleep

Research has shown psychotherapy to be the most effective form of trauma treatment, and I draw on both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-researched, integrative approach proven effective for treating trauma. It brings together elements from several treatment models into a set of standardized protocols.

How does it work?

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, often gentle, guided eye movements, to repeatedly activate both sides of the brain. These movements echo REM sleep, the phase when the mind naturally processes the events of our lives. EMDR seems to help the brain reprocess “stuck” memories so that normal processing can resume and the memory loses its grip.

What can EMDR help with?

Originally developed for PTSD, EMDR has also proven useful for:

  • Panic attacks and performance anxiety
  • Complicated grief and disturbing memories
  • Phobias and pain disorders
  • Addictions and stress reduction
  • The aftermath of sexual or physical abuse

If you’re carrying something that no longer serves you, reach out for a consultation and we can talk about whether EMDR might help. I provide EMDR therapy by telehealth throughout California.
